Product, Service, System

Rational

This product is a fresh take on the popular vertical garden concept. It will be implemented in to urban, apartment living environments. The garden is located in communal areas and will be shared by all residents.

The gardens bi folding form and modular pot system encourages the residents to manipulate the components to suit their communities needs. The garden can be lowered or heightened using a threaded  jack, this determines how many pots can be implemented. The lowered garden is ideal for children and the elderly.

Furthermore in contrast to the typical vertical garden this garden is double sided. This allows garden users to surround the garden, making gardening more socially interactive.  Once installed the residents can connect to the linked webpage. After signing up and registering they are welcome to access, information on maintaining their garden and are also encouraged to share photos, videos and recipes related to their garden. This webpage connects urban garden users to create an online community.

The system uses less water than traditional gardening techniques, through recycling its own water. It does this through mimicking 'herons' fountain theory. Where by water flows in to the reservoir (1), the air this water replaces is pushed in the reservoir (2) which furthermore pushes the water from this reservoir  into the upwards piping which than will re filter from the top reservoir onto the plants.

This PSS will play a part in preventing mental illness through the enrichment of the social connections between urban residents and online social web. It will promote a healthy diet through the production of organic, fresh produce and the access to healthy recipes. The wall will lastly encourage consumers to challenge them self to learn and develop new skills relating to the garden and the food being produced using the walls produce.

  1. Love the design! i think it really encourages really well, communities and healthy leaving through its form and pod system. The water system looks really innovative and also the structure, which i think really works, with a industrial vibe, bringing it back to the core aesthetics of gardening and nurseries. Possibly it would of been cool to have the rectangle plates that hold the plants to be cut in half and then swing, so you could create a level effect and which would create more emphasise on the community like structure.

  2. This is a fantastic idea and I believe it has a lot of design work incorporated into it. It will encourage people to grow their own vegetables and that has numerous positive impacts on people's lives. I like the fact it is collapsible and that it can be manoeuvred to gain maximum sun exposure. It has the potential to reach people who live in apartments with a balcony to make the most of their space, offering huge benefits to them as well as being a point of difference.

  3. Great concept and approach to the problem presented Rachel. I particularly like the idea of growing vegetables and plants to increase inner health and mental well being. The collapsable mechanism which allows it to raise and lower is nice, it allows for varied heights of the user , but also for it to be used in small confined areas meaning that different demographics can obtain and use the product. I think a handle could be added to all 4 sides perhaps a cut out groove so the user can lift and drop with varied options.

  4. Wow, this is actually really neat as an idea: the vertical communal gardens is something that's been commonly redesigned over and over again, but this new version of a community planter is both unique and clever - moreso through the portability of the overall structure and customisability (with pot sizes and various holes to rearrange) as well as the recycling of water run-off.

The only recommendation I would have is implementing handles into the sides of the structure for portability, whether the user is shifting the opened garden structure 'a little to the left,' or collapsing it entirely to take to a new floor or location (The collapsed form is still quite large, so I imagine trying to lift it off the floor without handles or an easy grip might be a little difficult or clumsy.)

Apart from that, it's a wonderful idea and I know I would definitely love to get this in my apartment block if you ever decided to get it into production!

  5. I think that this is an excellent idea. With such a large proportion of the population moving into apartments, I think it is important to introduce and promote communal areas, and includes things that could be usable by all. Plants are a great idea because they are relatively easy to maintain but can be used by all. The collapsable and manoeuvrable design would integrate better into this sort of space. Whilst the materials are quite industrial and will certainly withstand tough use, some reworking might keep those materials but fit in better with the somewhat sleek and slender designs of newer communal areas. Other than this it is a great concept.
